Small Bathroom Makeover Ideas for Indian Apartments

Most bathrooms in Indian city apartments are between 35 and 50 square feet. That is enough for a basin, a toilet and a shower, but rarely enough to feel relaxed in. The good news: you don't need to break walls to change how a small bathroom feels. A few smart choices make it look larger, stay cleaner and work better every day.

1. Free up the floor

The more floor you can see, the bigger a bathroom looks. Floor-standing toilets and pedestal basins break the floor into small, hard-to-clean pieces. Wall-mounted fittings leave one continuous surface that runs to the wall. If you're renovating, a wall hung commode with a concealed cistern is the single biggest change you can make. The cistern sits inside the wall, the bowl floats above the floor, and mopping underneath takes seconds.

2. Choose a slimmer basin

A basin about 400 mm deep fits comfortably even in a narrow bathroom, while a 500 mm one can block the door swing. Measure the clear space in front of the basin. You want at least 500 to 600 mm to stand and wash comfortably.

3. Go large with the mirror

A mirror that runs the full width of the basin wall visually doubles the room. An LED mirror does two jobs at once: it lights your face evenly for shaving or make-up, and it removes the need for a separate light fixture above the basin.

4. Use fewer, bigger tiles

Small tiles mean lots of grout lines, and grout lines make a room look busy and smaller. Large-format tiles, such as 600 × 1200 mm, in a light matte finish keep the walls calm. Matte tiles also hide water spots better than glossy ones.

5. Run one colour up the walls

Using the same tile or colour on the floor and walls blurs the edges of the room. If you want contrast, add it through fittings instead: matte black or brushed gold taps stand out against a pale wall without shrinking the space.

6. Swap the shower curtain for glass

A clear glass partition keeps water in the shower area but lets your eye travel across the whole room. A curtain cuts the bathroom in half visually. Even a single fixed glass panel of about 800 mm works well.

7. Build storage into the wall

A recessed niche in the shower wall holds shampoo bottles without any shelf sticking out. A wall-mounted vanity cabinet under the basin hides cleaning supplies and keeps the floor clear underneath, which matters in a small room.

8. Plan the lighting in layers

One ceiling light casts shadows exactly where you need to see. Use a soft ceiling light for general use and a mirror light for the face. Warm white (about 3000K) feels relaxing; cool white (4000K or more) is better for grooming.

9. Pick fittings that are easy to clean

In Indian cities, hard water leaves white marks on everything. Rimless toilet bowls, smooth basin shapes and fewer joints all mean less scrubbing. A small bathroom that stays clean easily always feels bigger.

Start with one change

You don't need to do all nine at once. If you're replacing only one thing, make it the toilet or the mirror: both change the feel of the room immediately.
